BOOKS, BOOKS, EVERYWHERE!

Authors, illustrators, poets and storytellers came to call at the Junior School as they celebrated Book Week, with an amazing array of characters appearing at the end of the week as the pupils dressed up as their favourite character.

Some of the activities during the week including author Jessica Spanyol visiting the Infant classes, who loved hearing her stories and making their own dinosaur and alien characters using collage and drawing. Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic Macbeth workshop before acting out parts of the play to help them understand context and character. After the drama workshops they learnt about clerihews – a poem that captures an essence of the idea and uses imagination. As a year group they wrote two fantastic poems.

Jennifer Bell came in to entertain Years 5 and 6 at the start of Book Week, recounting to pupils how she found a book that triggered her love of reading, how she became interested in children’s books and why she became an author, penning her popular series of books “The Uncommoners”. “I was hooked by the presentation,” said Max in Year 6. “I bought her book at the end of the day and read five chapters in one night!”

Book Week also gave the pupils an opportunity to work together, sharing their favourite books and activities of the week with Years 2 and 5 working together, Years 1 and 4 and Years 3 and 6 and Reception visiting the Pre-School.
